Ouseburn Festival 2024: artist commission

Closing date:

Ouseburn Trust

The Ouseburn Trust is commissioning an artist to work with local communities to produce wearable art for Ouseburn Festival 2024.

Through a series of workshops in the lead up to the Festival, the artist will work with children, young people, and adults to create pieces they can wear to take part in this year’s community parade on the Sunday of the festival.

The theme of this year’s parade is Down By The River, celebrating and showcasing the Ouseburn River and its wild inhabitants.

The commissioned artist will support people living in and around Ouseburn Valley to take part in the Festival’s community parade by helping them create show-stopping wearable art that mirrors this year’s theme; and will invite the people who produce the wearable art to show off their creations in the parade which will take place on the Sunday of the festival.

  • The wearable art pieces should be designed by the artist ahead of the workshops to give participants a starting point. The pieces could include capes, headpieces, wings, masks or anything else that can easily and comfortably be worn.
  • Workshop attendees may be groups of children aged between 8 – 11, young people aged 14 – 18, and adults. The artist will be aware of each workshop demographic ahead of time but should be prepared to adapt to the varied audiences.
  • All creative practices are welcome, but we’re keen to hear from artists who can find ways to help people create artwork sustainably with as little waste as possible.
  • A minimum of four half-day workshops will take place in the lead up to Ouseburn Festival, at various locations in or close to Ouseburn. This will include primary school aged children and young people – please specify if you have experience working with these groups.

The selected artist will receive support from Ouseburn Festival’s event coordinators, including with the arrangement of the in-community workshops.

The Ouseburn Trust is particularly interested in hearing from artists who are based in or close to the Ouseburn area, but the opportunity is open to applications from across Tyne and Wear.

There may be opportunities to find ways to make the most of the art created after the Festival weekend.

About Ouseburn Festival

Ouseburn Festival is a free annual arts and culture event that showcases the Ouseburn Valley in Newcastle upon Tyne — the place and its people. This year, the event will take place from 13 – 14 July 2024.

The event offers free, accessible and high-quality cultural experiences for people who live, work and play in Ouseburn Valley, whilst attracting new visitors from across the North East to the area.

The programme is a diverse mix of outdoor and in-venue music, art, dance, crafts, wellbeing and entertainment events, workshops and activities. The programme’s offering celebrates the people, businesses, and organisations who call the area home, be that musicians who found their start in the area’s practice rooms and open-mic nights or visual artists who reside in one of Ouseburn Valley’s many studios. Ouseburn Festival utilises unique green spaces as much as the well-loved local venues.

This commission has been made possible thanks to funding from the Newcastle Cultural Investment Fund and Community Foundation.
