The Light

County Durham

Set within the parkland of Aykley Heads in Durham, The Light brings contemporary art and culture into conversation with history, scientific discovery, and technological innovation.

Through an ambitious programme of exhibitions and events, The Light explores the ideas shaping our world today.

Art, science and technology have always informed and enriched one another — each driven by curiosity, shaped by experimentation, and powered by imagination. From the earliest tools to the latest breakthroughs, creativity and discovery have evolved side by side, expanding how we see, understand and inhabit the world. At The Light, this spirit of exploration shapes everything the organisation does, via a programme of exhibitions, events, immersive experiences, artistic commissions and residencies.

The venue features a permanent free exhibition dedicated to the Durham Light Infantry, telling the story of ‘The Durhams’ across more than 250 years. Alongside this, gallery spaces offer a changing programme of exhibitions, events and community activity.

Set within the parkland of Aykley Heads, just a short walk from the train station, we welcome visitors of all kinds – whether you come to be inspired, to collaborate, or simply to enjoy the café, shop and beautiful surroundings.
