Creative Central NCL is a place for independent artists, creative professionals and cultural organisations to thrive in central Newcastle upon Tyne.

Creative Central NCL wants to see a city centre that is brought to life by artists and creatives, where their skills, practice and experience is a cornerstone of what makes the city attractive and unique. To do that, the organisation has received funding from the North of Tyne Combined Authority (NTCA) to support independent artists, creative professionals and cultural organisations in a whole range of ways from 2022 – 2027.

The geography of Creative Central NCL is anchored around Clayton Street as a central spine and spreads outwards encompassing the conservation area from Grainger Market to the Centre for Life, including The Common Room and the Discovery Museum.

The area has untapped potential in terms of listed buildings and heritage assets, surrounded by established cultural and creative organisations, excellent transport links, and serving as a gateway to the city centre. We’ve identified an urgent need for affordable artist studio spaces and we hope that we can bring empty properties back into use for this purpose, which will form a major part of the work we’ll do during the project.

At the moment, this includes grants workspaces, skills development, training and pilot schemes; events and networking; and artist commissions for specific projects in the Creative Central NCL geographic area. Over time, there will be more and more things the creative community needs and Creative Central NCL will adapt to meet this need.
