Take Part in Teesdale: Artist facilitators

Closing date:

Northern Heartlands

Northern Heartlands is looking for experienced community artists to facilitate creative arts-based activity as part of ‘Take Part in Teesdale’, a project for adults living in rural Teesdale.

‘Take Part in Teesdale’ will take place in the villages of Butterknowle, Cockfield, Evenwood and Woodland and will take place between April 2024 and January 2025. Sessions will take place in one venue, in one village, for five weeks at a time and move to the next village consecutively. Sessions run on Wednesday afternoons from 1 – 3pm. The programme will offer a range of creative stimulus for participants that encourages engagement, increases confidence and develops creativity to improve health and wellbeing.

Activity could involve collaborative artwork, connection to aspects of local interest, making work to exhibit, visits and engaging stimulus for creative projects/enquiries as part of the weekly sessional programme. Northern Heartlands would like to encourage curiosity and wonder through an enquiry-based approach.

Northern Heartlands is inviting expressions of interest from artists who can plan to facilitate a programme of work over a five-week block. The remaining five-week blocks are scheduled as follows:

  • Block 1 Butterknowle Village Hall, 26 June – 24 July
  • Block 2 Woodland Village Hall, 31 July – 28 August
  • Block 3 Randolph Community Centre, Evenwood, 4 September – 2 October
  • Block 4 YMCA Community Cafe Cockfield, 9 October – 6 November
  • Block 5 Butterknowle Village Hall, 13 November – 11 December
  • Block 6 Woodland Village Hall, 8 January – 5 February

It is envisaged that individuals may attend activity over a period of time and may attend more than one venue during the lifetime of the project. Due to the nature of circumstances, individuals may not be in a position to attend every session.

Participants will be referred into the project by Social Prescribing Link Workers. They can also self-refer. New referrals may also join the group at any point during the life of the programme. Activity will need to be designed to be inclusive and offer a way in for new individuals that does not depend on prior knowledge or to have created existing work.

Northern Heartlands would like to work with creatives who will:

  • Enable individuals to connect with others and their place through the creative activity to help reduce loneliness, isolation and improve health and wellbeing
  • Support participants to explore ideas, ways of seeing and listening to find new perspectives
  • Facilitate high quality engaging experiences for and with community groups
  • Have experience of working with adults who have a range of needs and abilities

Develop an activity plan which intentionally develops creativity, can respond to participants needs and encourages individuals to follow their own creative ideas, enquiries, skills and practice. A plan may include a range of creative stimulus, prompts or provocations and some non-artist led/reflective sessions encouraging group ownership and self-led enquiry. It may take place across a block of one five-week session or more.

Creatives will need:

  • Experience in facilitating community arts activity (in any artform)
  • Experience of supporting individuals to develop their creativity. By this, Northern Heartlands means their ability to be imaginative, inquisitive, collaborative, disciplined and persistent (see Creative Habits of Mind Model below as a way of considering creativity — created by Creativity Culture and Education and The Centre for Real World)
  • Experience of working with adults over the age of 16
  • Some experience of working with adults who may be living with poor mental health challenges
  • An enhanced DBS dated within the last 3 years (not essential).

Northern Heartlands will provide:

  • A fee of £625 plus £150 for materials per 5 weeks of delivery. (Equivalent to £125 per session plus £30 for materials per session.)
  • A dedicated support worker for each session, to support individuals to engage with the activity, monitor and evaluate individuals experience and help with set up and clear away in the space.
  • Regular support and communication from the Northern Heartlands team to ensure the smooth running of the project.
  • The opportunity to reflect on practice alongside other creatives.
  • The opportunity to work alongside Northern Heartlands, help shape its work and develop its practice.

Budget £625 fee + £150 materials for each block
