The Late Shows
There are four commission opportunities in total. Each is matched to a venue for The Late Shows 2024 in Newcastle upon Tyne.
The Common Room will be inviting audiences into the building experience its spaces and take part in some ‘bandeoke’ in the 5|Quarter café bar alongside this brand-new commission. The venue is particularly interested in commission ideas that are future-facing, using themes around innovation, sustainability and science rather than focusing specifically on the past. A playful approach that creates a juxtaposition with the historic surroundings would be welcomed. The Common Room is keen to commission visual, or installation-based artforms as opposed to performance or sound-based work.
Dance City will be throwing open its doors for a building takeover full of performance, taster sessions and insight into how its artists develop and create their work. Its building contains a range of social spaces and viewing locations interconnected across different levels, by stairs, lifts and corridors. It is seeking artists who wish to create work for or in response to these spaces, and is interested in commission ideas from artists working across all artistic disciplines that resonate particularly with the themes of merging art forms, crossing boundaries, embracing different traditions and global communities.
Blackfriars will be inviting audiences into the grounds and buildings to discover its historic spaces alongside this commission. It is particularly interested in ideas that take inspiration from some of the many inhabitants and communities of Blackfriars over its long lifetime. In the guidelines (below) are some prompts you might find useful to think about, from the Creative Guilds situated at Blackfriars for some 400 years to a 14th century medieval recipe book associated with King Richard II. But these aren’t instructions and is also not a complete list, please conduct your own research, and respond to the building, its spaces and its history in any way you choose. Any artform is acceptable.
Grainger Market will be inviting audiences after dark to explore its historical arcades and alleyways. It is interested in commission ideas that take inspiration from the market which is rich in history, stories and quirky architectural features that might inspire you. Any artform is acceptable.
