Yevonde: Life and Colour

Mon – Sat, 10am – 4.30pm

Laing Art Gallery

On loan from the National Portrait Gallery, Yevonde: Life and Colour showcases the groundbreaking work of 20th century British photographer Yevonde via over 150 works, including 25 newly-discovered photographs.

Yevonde was the first person in Britain to exhibit colour photographs and was known for her portraits, commercial commissioned work and still lives, which she produced throughout her career. Her portraits include some of the most famous faces of the time, including George Bernard Shaw, Vivien Leigh, John Gielgud and Princess Alexandra. Her breadth of work and use of colour technique marks her as a trailblazer in the history of British portrait photography.

Yevonde: Life and Colour will also feature self-portraiture and her most famous and well-regarded body of work, Goddesses & Others (1935), a series of women dressed as goddesses posed in surreal tableaux.
