In Finnish director Aki Kauismäki’s The Match Factory Girl (Finland 1990 69′), Iris has a dead-end job in a match-factory, lives with her unforgiving parents, and her social life is a disaster. When she is made pregnant after a one-night stand by a man who thought she was a prostitute, she decides that enough is enough and plans her revenge.
In this special event, Akingbade discusses the film in relation to her own interests in history, legacy, labour and power.
