Take Over 2024 — Octavia Hands: Revalued

Tue – Thu, 11am – 4pm; Sat, 1 – 4pm

Shieldfield Art Works

Octavia Hands asks why objects and items lose their material value the more they show signs of ageing and being worn out.

Revalued explores what misplaced, broken, and discarded objects can reveal about our own attitudes, and whether stories are being erased for the sake of looking new.

Take Over is Shieldfield Art Works’ annual programme showcasing emerging artists, as part of its commitment to support up-and-coming talent. Join SAW for three unique exhibitions featuring artists Octavia Hands, Maura Hawkes, Bethan Harris, Liam Aldridge, Anna Muddiman, Lucy Thomas & Lucy Turner.

Although each exhibition is individual, they are all united by thinking deeply about value and the importance of care. Octavia Hands examines how the value of things shifts when we ‘mend’ using homemade repairs. Bethan Harris, Liam Aldridge, Anna Muddiman and Lucy Thomas use found and natural materials to create new art objects, highlighting affordable, eco-conscious art-making. Lucy Turner uses the history of Tulip Mania to pose humorous questions about the value of art, and the challenges of feeling valuable as an artist.
