Stephen Waller: The Middlesbrough Model

Tue – Sat, 10am – 4.30pm; Sun 12 – 4pm

MIMA (Middlesbrough Institute of Modern Art)

Stephen Waller’s scale model recreates the St Hilda’s district, Middlesbrough in the 1950s and shows its Victorian architecture.  Carving the townscape from soft balsa wood, with every detail including the roof tiles and cobbled streets meticulously crafted over a decade, Waller recreated the historic centre of his hometown, once the civic centre of Middlesbrough, using blueprints from the 1830s, spending up to twelve hours a day on the work.
