Playing With Rules

Mon – Sat, 9am – 5pm

Preview 27 June, 3 – 5pm

Grainger Market

Moving image works which invite visitors to reconsider the normality of everyday actions and the structures that shape us.

The artists in Playing With Rules transcend invisible laws of nature, making us question what is ‘normal’. In The Hunt, Christian Jankowski hunts food in a supermarket with a bow and arrow, whereas A Skulk in London plays with how we understand and interact with the animal world around. Surveillance Chess by !Mediengruppe Bitnik reverses power structures with a game of chess through a CCTV system, and Peter Aerschmann’s Sputnik displaces the technocracy of space exploration with a focus on the materiality of waste produced by human civilisation: what if crisps and cigarettes are all we leave behind? Finally in Abi Palmer Invents the Weather (Heat), artist Abi Palmer recreates weather conditions for her cats, while Copa & Sordes invite a raven for a fine breakfast.

Curated by Videocity, an international curator-artist network promoting video art in public spaces which aims to shed new light on everyday environments.
