MIMAZINA: Things to Do – Field Trip with Nell Catchpole

1pm - 4pm

MIMA (Middlesbrough Institute of Modern Art)

Connect with the environment through listening, sound-making and field recording in this trip to the mouth of the river Tees which will introduce you to artist Nell Catchpole’s artistic methods and allow you to find and field-record your own responses to this extraordinary land and seascape.

Starting with ‘deep listening’ exercises, the trip will involve exploring the open sands, stones, driftwood, grasses and wildlife of this beautiful, stark site where the river meets the sea. You will make your own sonic contribution/response to the place, using the found materials you are drawn to.

Field recording is an accessible way to transform your experience of the outdoor environment, hearing everything with a new and heightened awareness. As part of the trip, you will make a recording with an easy-to-use field recorder, generating a sonic memory of your intimate connection with nature and place that you can take home with you.

Nell Catchpole is an ecological sound artist, composer, educator, and researcher. She is co-director of Sonic Arts Week 2023, a project of The Auxiliary in Middlesbrough. Her practice explores different states of being and inter-relationship in the environment.

Her recent work, Teesmouth (2023) is included in People Powered: Stories from the River Tees. Originally broadcast on BBC Radio 3’s ‘Sounding Change’ programme, the piece incorporates intimate listening, sound recording and conversations between Catchpole and sound artist Kathy Hinde as well as local fishermen and walkers encountered at the site. Together, they reflect on human and non-human interactions within the Tees estuary.

This field trip is organised with artists Foundation Press. Free but booking essential.
