Artist Laura Wilson’s Kitchen & Garden Residency concludes with the launch of Base Ingredients, a series of artworks installed in the MIMA Kitchen which explore ways in which the Kitchen, Gallery and Garden interconnect, differ and feed one another.
Join Laura and special guests for a meal celebrating seasonal, locally produced food, developed with the artist and MIMA Kitchen team and a game of Base Ingredients, which is based on PIT, a fast-paced card game inspired by the Chicago Board of Trade, also known as The Wheat Pit, one of the world’s oldest futures and options exchanges of commodities.
Since Spring 2021 Wilson has spent time in the kitchen and garden, cooking, digging and discussing with MIMA Kitchen and Gallery staff, visitors, students and researchers at Teesside University and local producers to try to understand what the base ingredients are of the organisation – what makes it unique, how things work: what does work, what doesn’t work, the challenges, thinking about inter-relationships between spaces and economies, their relationship with the wider world (both on a local, national and international level) and thinking about the future.
Belfast-born Laura Wilson lives and works in London. She is interested in how history is carried and evolved through everyday materials, trades and craftsmanship. She works with specialists to develop sculptural and performative works that amplify the relationship between materiality, memory and tacit knowledge. Her interdisciplinary and research-based works have been exhibited widely across the UK and internationally.
Over 18s only. Food provided will be vegetarian and prepared in an open kitchen. MIMA cannot therefore guarantee that food is trace free. Contact email@example.com to discuss access and dietary requirements.
