Janine Burrows: The Land Where I Would Be

Mon – Sat, 10am – 5pm; Sun, 10am – 4pm

The Old School Gallery

A new body of work by Yorkshire-based painter, illustrator and designer Janine Burrows.

The Land Where I Would Be is a celebration of all that Burrows loves about Northumberland. In preparing for this show, Burrows has explored her favourite and most treasured places she has found in Northumberland on her many visits to the area. From first visiting Alnmouth in 2017 seeking a winter escape, Burrows knew it was a “special place to us” and that “Alnmouth literally felt like home.”

With family ties through grandparents who were from Hexham and Corbridge originally but moved to Hull after the war, Burrows spent many years on an annual pilgrimage to visit them in their homeland. Her paintings are a direct result of her love and connection to both Northumbrian coast and countryside.

With a background in surface pattern and printed textile, Burrows creates expressive, textural depictions in paint, using expressive brush strokes, subtle colour and delicate detailing. She has become known for her contemporary and considered colour palette, creating gentle, poetic scenes, often complimented by narrative detailing. The show will have a range of original paintings along with her prints. There will also be a selection of little painted houses, hand painted plates and cards too.
