Jack Coates: Northern Lines

Mon, Thu., 9am – 7pm; Tue, Wed, Fri, 9am – 5pm; Sat, 9am – 1pm

The Gallery, Gateshead Library

This exhibition showcases Newcastle-based artist Jack Coates' obsession with observational drawing and highlights his interest in the structure, characteristics and contours of local architecture.

Jack Coates creates fluid, gestural and impressionistic artwork that captures the details and shapes of the urban landscape, consciously embracing an autonomous style. Colour, for the most part, has become superfluous to his work and recent drawings, although taken from sketches at locations, have a more graphic feel.

The closely observed representations of the built environment show connections between different structures in a location, often with a focus on light and shadows.

Jack Coates has established his working practice from a studio in Pilgrim Street in Newcastle and more recently at Atlas North East Studios in Gateshead.
