Incursions: Tracing the Urban Motorway with Sarah Bird

Sat12 – 2pm

Farrell Centre

Collaborative artist-led walking project Incursions are leading special city walking forums in collaboration with The Farrell Centre. Their second walk will look at the 1960s Central Development Plan and the historic urban motorway that cuts through the city, with urbanist Sarah Bird.

This walk will tackle some of the themes presented in More with Less at The Farrell Centre, which explores how ‘architecture might be rethought, remade, and reimagined in response to our rapidly changing world.’ Incursions will invite participants to examine the ways in which the future of the city can be reimagined beyond a capitalist framework.

The walk traverses social histories, civic infrastructures, future developments, public and private spaces, architectures, stories and mythologies. The walk will be followed by an activity, refreshments, and time to explore the exhibitions at the Farrell Centre.

About Incursions

Incursions is a collaborative walking project based in Newcastle-upon-Tyne, facilitated by Archie Smith and Kitty McKay. Through practices of psychogeography, social engagement, collective research, mapping, and friendship, they work to shift dominant neoliberal narratives of space and place, co-authoring ‘counter-narratives’ for how we inhabit civic worlds and build active solidarities.

Their weekly ‘walking forums’ in the Northeast form part of a broader research project that utilises radio and sound production, filmmaking and writing as both research and practice methods.
