Edward Hillier: Painting Expressive Landscapes

11.30am – 3.30pm

Friends of the Hatton

A workshop focusing on painting expressive landscapes from photographs, inspired by the work of David Bomberg and Joan Eardley.

Photographs are one of the richest sources of inspiration for landscape painters and almost all artists will use them at some point to create work. This three-hour workshop will help participants gain a deeper understanding of the potential of this way of working and will introduce a range of different techniques to help stimulate new and unexpected landscape paintings.

The workshop will start with a brief overview of Eardley and Bomberg’s landscape painting followed by a series of rapid chalk drawings based on their work. The aim is to help participants develop their own work in response to these studies and the final hour or so will be a chance to create a sustained painting influenced by the experimental approach  from the first part of the day.

All materials will be provided but it would be helpful for participants to bring several photographs of landscapes which they would like to work from.

Edward Hillier is a painter, photographer and filmmaker who creates work inspired by the natural world.
