City Forum: Education and the Built Environment

6 – 7.30pm

Farrell Centre

Farrell Centre's regular City Forum asks what the built environment can offer to young people.

The City Forum is a regular platform for local people to come together and air their views and perspectives about issues and ideas shaping their experience of the city. Facilitated by the Farrell Centre team alongside invited guest speakers, the City Forum is led and directed by its participants.

For March, the forum looks at the ways in which young people can be supported to become engaged citizens; questioning if an education centred around the built environment can help to develop and hone criticality, oracy, and civic responsibility.

Participants include architects and educational professionals who have looked to the built environment as a means to redefine approaches to education and strengthen children’s connection to place and their futures.

Professor Rosie Parnell‘s (School of Architecture Planning and Landscape, Newcastle University) research, teaching and practice combines an interest in children and architecture, exploring how design processes and co-design can be implemented within a built environment education. Rosie has worked with the Farrell Centre to lead on a Learning Lab module which enables MA Architecture students to develop educational resources through live work with school students and teachers.

Dr Deborah Ralls is a lecturer in Education at Newcastle University focused on working collaboratively with children and young people, parents, community members, education practitioners and other professionals to redefine education for more inclusive places. Deborah has completed an international research project, funded by the Leverhulme Trust, working with communities in Berlin, Rio de Janeiro, New York and Barcelona.
