Book launch: Michele Allen, ‘Mud Mapping’

2 – 4pm

Baltic Centre for Contemporary Art

Newcastle-based artist Michele Allen launches her new book 'Mud Mapping' as part of the project of the same name.

Michele Allen‘s Mud Mapping project was produced over a four-month period while artist in residence with the Hub for Biotechnology in the Built Environment, a project funded by Gateshead Riverside Partnership.

The work explores tidal mudflats on the River Tyne, thinking about mud as a habitat, a slow-moving dynamic force in the landscape shaped by tidal flows and interactions with the microbial, animal and human life which live in and around it. The work aims to think about the complexity of mud, a material which is commonplace, has a low status and is not typically a subject for art.

At this special event, Allen will talk about the book and the wider Mud Mapping project, sharing historic maps of the river over time — many of which label the mud. Copies of the book will be on sale in the shop.

This event takes place in Baltic’s Front Room space.
