Berwick Film & Media Arts Festival

The 19th edition of Berwick Film and Media Arts Festival presents 47 films across five programmes chronicling desires for liberation. The programme grapples with the potency and ambivalence of hope — across complex emotional, social, and political entanglements.

The festival opens with a new restoration of Ghassan Salhab’s Phantom Beirut (Lebanon, France, 1989) as part of the Essential Cinema programme, alongside works by Nadia el-Fani, Heiny Srour, Ledia Laius and Isao Fujisawa’s Bye Bye Love (Japan, 1974).

Highlights include filmmakers in focus Eduardo Williams and Basma al-Sharif as filmmakers in focus, and guests Maria Fusco, Onyeka Igwe and Emilia Beatriz as part of the festival’s Propositions strand. Elsewhere in the programme, Brussels-based artist-run film and distribution platform elephy will host a roundtable conversation.

This year’s New Cinema Awards features 14 UK, two European, four world, and three world festival premières. A free programme of exhibitions features works from Adam Piron, Cécile B Evans, Chloë Delanghe & Mattijs Driesen and Basma al-Sharif — and new for 2024, social space, screening library and discussion series The Burr of Berwick presents an opportunity to come together to collectively explore different topics with guests through moving image.
