Art + Social No. 16

5 – 7pm

MIMA (Middlesbrough Institute of Modern Art)

MIMA's Art + Social programme is an opportunity to meet and chat with the artists and creatives from the Tees Valley and further afield about their latest projects.

This month’s Art + Social event includes the following:

Dave Charlesworth, A Hand is Dealt
A Hand is Dealt is a collaborative world-building card game conceived by Dave Charlesworth. You are invited to engage in the creative process, crafting stories together using the game’s cards. Dave serves as the deck’s archivist, offering insights and interpretations as players draw cards to shape their narratives.

Previously featured as part of a solo show at South Kiosk, London and later showcased at Manchester Contemporary alongside Yan Tan Tether, the game invites participants to consider ways to naturally innovate, challenge and lead through artistic practice. After each session, a new card is generated, expanding the deck’s repertoire. What began with a modest nine cards has since grown to nearly forty, reflecting the evolving tapestry of collaborative storytelling fostered by the game.

Programmed at Art + Social as part of Clore Leadership’s Tees Valley Leadership Programme. There will be an opportunity to chat with a member of the Clore Leadership team about forthcoming development opportunities in the Tees Valley.

Bottle of Notes soundbite studio
Share your stories about local landmark and sculpture Bottle of Notes and participate in a research project led by Karis Richardson at the School of Arts & Creative Industries, Teesside University.

Karis’ PhD research centres on the secret life of public sculptures in public spaces and takes the 1993 sculpture by Claes Oldenburg and Coosje Van Bruggen on Middlesbrough’s Centre Square as a case study. At Art + Social, she collects reflections and opinions through audio recording. Contributions will be used as part of Karis’ thesis.

If you are unable to attend but would like to contribute to the project, you can e-mail your stories and photographs directly to Karis.

MIMA Great Create pop-up display
Visit a pop-up display of artworks shortlisted for this year’s MIMA Great Create competition, showcasing a diverse range of practices which respond to this year’s theme, ‘creating a sustainable future.’

The MIMA Great Create is an annual competition developed by the School of Arts & Creative Industries, Teesside University and MIMA. The display will remain in place until 5 May.
