Alchemy of Minds: Are You Alright?

Mon – Fri, 9am – 5pm; Sat, 9am – 3pm

Darlington Library Art Gallery

Are You Alright? is an exhibition forming part of Turner on Tees, the Tees Valley-wide programme running alongside Turner Prize 2026 at MIMA.

“Are you alright?” is one of the most familiar greetings in the North East, the kind of thing said in passing and rarely answered with much honesty. This exhibition treats it as a real question.

Alchemy of Minds, a collective of Black artists working across the region and beyond, respond through painting, drawing, digital art, mixed media and installation, with work that lives in the gap between how things appear and how they actually are. Some of it turns inward, towards the body, faith and the slow business of healing; some looks outward at the pressures that shape a life. Rather than telling the story of Black identity through achievement or hardship, the exhibition makes room for care and emotional honesty, asking what keeps us all going when the answer to the question is anything but simple.

Presented for Black History Month, and part of the Turner on Tees programme of events and exhibitions.
