Mike Fielding’s books are often defined by a deep passion for the natural world, combining his own high-fidelity field recordings with a unique visual artistic style. Some of his titles also incorporate poetry blended into immersive media. His sound art and istallation works use sound in a descriptive sense rather than in Western musical notation and pulse.
Mike studied fine art and environmental design at Ashburne House. Opened as a college of art in 1934, it became part of the University of Sunderland in 1996, before the faculty was relocated to the city centre campus in 2012.
Mike is also part of the avant-garde music outfit dumdum SCORE, whose albums include Audio Sheep, Golgata and Audio Sheep ‘REDUX’. dumdum SCORE were featured in Bill Furlong’s legendary 1980s Audio Arts cassette magazine (Volume 8 number 2) along with Andy Warhol, John Latham and others. Audio Arts is now digitised and archived at the Tate Modern. Mike’s sound art can be found at voert.digital and Bandcamp.
Mike is an active environmental campaigner, Northumberland Wildlife Trust donor, fundraiser and RSPB Species Sponsor. He is curator of the Northumberland sound archive, a member of the Wildlfe Sound Recording Society and has also contributed illustrations for other publications, including John Grundy’s History of Northumberland.
