Dr Gillie Kleiman has been making performances, texts, events and pedagogical encounters for 17 years, presenting work in venues and festivals associated with dance, theatre, live art, visual art and social activity, including Dance Umbrella, SPILL Festival of Performance, Fierce Festival, Sadler’s Wells, and Nottdance, as well as in gallery hallways, in community centres, and on tiny pub stages. Best known for her research, choreographic and curatorial work related to professional dance with non-professional performers, in 2020 Gillie initiated a new cycle of work related to fat and fatness.
Gillie has facilitated, taught and led in community dance, further education, and higher education internationally; she has led projects with young people for Baltic Centre for Contemporary Art, Siobhan Davies Dance, Youth Dance England, and Dance City; with older people for Equal Arts and Guildford Borough Council, and with working-age adults with FABRIC, Yorkshire Dance, Creative Crawley, GIFT and many, many others. She has worked in higher education, including as Head of Higher Education at Dance City, since 2008. Gillie consults for arts organisations and other artists; she is a Trustee of People Dancing, the foundation for community dance, and is External Examiner at the Danish National School of Performing Arts for the MFA Dance and Participation.
