Alan Hathaway uses installation, film, drawing and print to re-present cultural fragments drawn from the recent histories of modernist abstraction, punk, post-punk and electronic music.

He is interested in how abstraction (as both a material and a social process) has been utilised across radical visual art practices and experimental pop in order to affect cultural change. Through a forensic exploration of appropriated matter his work examines how our cultural memories are forged by particular material abstractions of both sound and image: monochrome colour, surface, light, feedback, ambience, analogue wave, CRT screens, halftone printing.

He has exhibited widely nationally and internationally (Copenhagen, Sydney, Melbourne, Ukraine, Glasgow, London) and since 2014 has worked with numerous artist-led spaces in the North East of England. His work is held in the British Museum’s drawing and print archive and was shortlisted for the Jerwood Drawing Prize. He has been artist in residence at mima and received awards from DCMS Cultural Recovery Fund, ACE DYCP, Creative UK, and The North East Artist’s Fund in partnership with BALTIC Gateshead.
